Andy Biggs is a man who knows how to fight. For six years, he battled the federal government over a First Amendment issue, and he won. His story is an inspiring example of how one person can stand up to government overreach and prevail.

The Case

In 2012, Biggs, a Republican congressman from Arizona, introduced a bill that would have allowed businesses to refuse service to same-sex couples on religious grounds. The bill was met with immediate opposition from LGBT rights groups, who argued that it would legalize discrimination.

The Department of Justice (DOJ) also opposed the bill, and it threatened to sue Biggs if he tried to pass it. Biggs refused to back down, and the DOJ made good on its threat. In 2014, the DOJ filed a lawsuit against Biggs, alleging that the bill violated the Constitution's Equal Protection Clause.

The Battle

The legal battle between Biggs and the DOJ lasted for six years. During that time, Biggs faced off against some of the most powerful lawyers in the country. But he never gave up. He represented himself in court, and he refused to settle with the DOJ.

In 2016, a federal judge ruled in favor of Biggs, dismissing the DOJ's lawsuit. The DOJ appealed the ruling, but the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the lower court's decision. In 2019, the Supreme Court declined to hear the case, effectively ending the DOJ's pursuit of Biggs.

The Victory

Biggs' victory was a major victory for religious freedom and free speech. It showed that the government cannot silence people simply because it disagrees with their views. It also showed that one person can make a difference, even when facing off against the full force of the federal government.

In his book, How I Fought the Feds for Six Years and Won, Biggs tells the story of his legal battle. He writes about the challenges he faced, the sacrifices he made, and the lessons he learned. His book is a must-read for anyone who cares about the First Amendment or who is interested in the fight against government overreach.

Andy Biggs is a true American hero. He stood up to the federal government and fought for his beliefs. He won a major victory for religious freedom and free speech. His story is an inspiration to us all.
