Sample Sermon: The Parable of the Sower (Proper 13)
The Parable of the Sower is one of the most well-known parables in the Bible. It is a story about a farmer who sowed seed on four different types of soil. The seed that fell on good soil grew and produced a bountiful harvest. The seed that fell on rocky soil grew, but the plants withered away because they did not have enough root. The seed that fell among thorns grew, but the thorns choked out the plants. The seed that fell on the path was trampled on and eaten by birds.
Jesus told this parable to teach us about the different ways that people respond to the Word of God. Some people are like the good soil. They hear the Word of God and they let it take root in their hearts. They live their lives in accordance with the teachings of Jesus Christ, and they bear much fruit.
Other people are like the rocky soil. They hear the Word of God, but they do not let it take root in their hearts. They may be excited about the Gospel for a while, but when they face persecution or trials, they fall away.
Still other people are like the thorny soil. They hear the Word of God, but they allow the cares of this world to choke out the Word. They may start out well, but they eventually get sidetracked by other things.
The fourth group of people are like the path. They hear the Word of God, but they do not understand it. They may even be offended by it. The Word of God does not take root in their hearts, and it does not produce any fruit.
Jesus wants us to be like the good soil. He wants us to hear the Word of God and let it take root in our hearts. He wants us to live our lives in accordance with the teachings of Jesus Christ, and he wants us to bear much fruit.
