The Early Years

Abraham Lincoln was born in a log cabin in Hodgenville, Kentucky, on February 12, 1809. His parents, Thomas and Nancy Hanks Lincoln, were poor farmers. They moved frequently in search of better land, and Abraham had little formal education.

Despite his lack of formal schooling, Lincoln was a voracious reader. He taught himself law and became a successful lawyer in Illinois. In 1842, he married Mary Todd, and they had four children together.

The Political Years

Lincoln entered politics in 1846, when he was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives. He served in the House for eight years, and then in 1858, he ran for the U.S. Senate against Stephen Douglas. Lincoln lost the election, but his famous "House Divided" speech attracted national attention.

In 1860, Lincoln was nominated for president by the Republican Party. He won the election, and became the 16th president of the United States on March 4, 1861.

The Civil War

The American Civil War began in 1861, shortly after Lincoln took office. The war was fought between the Union (the Northern states) and the Confederacy (the Southern states). Lincoln led the Union to victory in 1865, and he issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed slaves in the Confederate states.

Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth on April 14, 1865, just days after the end of the war. He is considered one of the greatest presidents in American history.

The Legacy of Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln is remembered as one of the most important figures in American history. He led the country through the Civil War, and he issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed slaves in the Confederate states. He is also remembered for his famous Gettysburg Address, which he delivered in 1863.

Lincoln's legacy is one of courage, determination, and compassion. He is an inspiration to people all over the world.

Abraham Lincoln was a complex and fascinating figure. He was a man of great ambition and drive, but he was also a man of great compassion. He was a leader who saved the Union and freed the slaves, but he was also a man who was deeply affected by the death of his own son. Lincoln's life is a story of triumph and tragedy, and it is a story that continues to inspire people today.
