In Romans Disarmed: Resisting Empire, Demanding Justice, Bruce W. Longenecker challenges traditional understandings of Roman imperial rule and the nature of resistance to it. Drawing on a wide range of ancient sources, Longenecker argues that the Roman Empire was not as powerful or monolithic as it is often portrayed, and that there were many forms of resistance to imperial rule, both violent and nonviolent.

Longenecker begins by examining the Roman Empire's own propaganda, which depicted the empire as a benevolent force that brought peace and prosperity to its subjects. However, Longenecker argues that this propaganda was far from the truth. In reality, the Roman Empire was a brutal and oppressive regime that imposed heavy taxes on its subjects, conscripted them into its armies, and ruthlessly suppressed any form of dissent.

Despite the empire's power, Longenecker argues that there were many forms of resistance to Roman rule. Some of this resistance was violent, such as the slave revolts led by Spartacus and the Jewish revolts against Roman rule. However, Longenecker also argues that there were many forms of nonviolent resistance, such as tax resistance, refusal to serve in the military, and the formation of alternative communities.

Longenecker's work is a major contribution to the study of the Roman Empire and the nature of resistance to it. It challenges traditional understandings of the empire and shows that there were many ways in which people resisted Roman rule. Romans Disarmed is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of the Roman Empire or the nature of resistance to oppression.
