In the glittering world of 18th-century European opera, no names shone brighter than those of the Caffarelli brothers. Their voices, honed by the cruel practice of castration, captivated audiences across the continent, earning them both fame and fortune.

But behind the dazzling performances, there lay a world of intrigue, scandal, and broken hearts. The Caffarellis were known not only for their musical genius but also for their reckless gambling, outrageous behavior, and scandalous affairs.

In his captivating new book, "Never Gamble With Caffarelli: Those Scandalous Caffarellis," acclaimed music historian Dr. Roberto Meloncelli delves into the fascinating and tumultuous lives of these legendary castrati.

The Castrato Phenomenon

To fully understand the story of the Caffarelli brothers, it is essential to first explore the phenomenon of castration in 18th-century music.

In an era when women were largely excluded from public performance, castrati—boys who were castrated before puberty to preserve their high-pitched singing voices—filled the void. These singers possessed extraordinary vocal abilities, renowned for their vocal range, agility, and power.

The Rise of the Caffarellis

The Caffarelli brothers, Giovanni (1710-1783) and Gaetano (1703-1783),were born into poverty in the southern Italian town of Bari. Despite their humble origins, they displayed exceptional musical talent from a young age.

In 1723, at the age of 13, Gaetano was castrated in the hope that his voice would reach its full potential. Giovanni followed suit three years later. Both brothers went on to study under renowned singing teachers, honing their skills and preparing for their eventual rise to stardom.

A Star is Born

Caffarelli's debut in Rome in 1730 was a resounding success. His sweet, powerful voice and charismatic stage presence immediately won over the hearts of audiences. Within a few years, he became one of the most sought-after singers in Italy.

His fame spread far and wide, and he soon found himself performing in the most prestigious opera houses of Europe, including the Teatro San Carlo in Naples, the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, and the Royal Opera House in London.

Scandals and Excess

Along with their musical brilliance, the Caffarelli brothers were also known for their scandalous behavior. They were notorious gamblers, often losing vast sums of money at the gaming tables. Their extravagant lifestyle included lavish parties, numerous mistresses, and a seemingly endless supply of champagne.

In 1738, Gaetano was involved in a particularly scandalous affair with the Countess of Pompadour, the mistress of King Louis XV of France. The affair caused a major scandal and nearly cost Gaetano his career.

A Tragic End

Despite their wealth and success, the lives of the Caffarelli brothers ended in tragedy. Giovanni retired from singing in 1770, but continued to gamble away his fortune until he died in poverty in 1783.

Gaetano continued to perform until his voice began to decline. He died in 1783, just a few months after his brother. Both brothers were buried in the same tomb in the Pantheon in Rome.

A Legacy of Scandal and Genius

The Caffarelli brothers left behind a legacy that continues to fascinate music lovers to this day. Their voices may be lost to time, but their story remains a testament to the extraordinary heights and tragic depths of human talent.

Dr. Meloncelli's book, "Never Gamble With Caffarelli: Those Scandalous Caffarellis," is a meticulously researched and captivating account of the lives of these remarkable singers. It is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of music, opera, or the scandalous lives of the rich and famous.
