Ames was born in River Falls, Wisconsin, in 1941. His father was a CIA officer, and young Aldrich grew up in a world of intrigue and secrecy. After graduating from college, Ames joined the CIA in 1962. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a senior analyst in the Soviet counterintelligence division.
